Important: if you are ordering more than one baton, you will complete the requested information, and then add to bag. At that point, you will then reenter any information for the second baton if it will be different from the first baton, and then click ADD MORE. If the second baton is the same as the first, simply click ADD MORE.
You will be asked what type of wood you want for the handle. You will then be asked the handle shape - you may refer to the two pictures to see which type of shapes are available. Next, you will be prompted for the total length of the baton the type of finish you would like on the shaft. Each selection can be completed with a drop down menu. All four areas must be completed in order for you to complete your purchase.
You can refer to the pictures above for examples of Natural Wood Finish or Glossy White Finish, as well as for handle shapes and wood types. Keep in mind that every piece of wood has a different look and grain pattern, even within species. No duplicator is used to turn the handles, so there are always slight variations in shape details.
Description
Wood shaft batons are created on a full size Powermatic lathe with superior high-speed turning tools. Each 10 ½ - 12 ½” long shaft is created from a solid piece of soft maple or poplar. The wood shaft can either be left in its natural color and sealed with clear lacquer, or it can be finished in a glossy white lacquer. Once joined with the Handle, the shaft and handle complete the full length of the baton, usually 12 1/2 - 14 1/2 inches long.
The baton handles usually range from 2 - 2 1/2 inches in length and 1/2 - 7/8 in thickness. They are turned on the lathe and can be made from several different kinds of domestic or exotic woods (see price listing for choices). No stains are used, and the handles retain the natural beauty of the wood. Several different shapes are available: egg, large egg, teardrop, large teardrop, Elliptical, Silhouette, and Rook. Variations of those can be combined as well as special requests for shapes. Handles range in size from 1/2 - 7/8 inches wide and between 2 - 2 1/2 inches long. Longer or wider handles and custom shapes may be created if desired – simply mail a photocopy of the baton (life size) to me and I will do my best to match it.
The handle and shaft are dry fitted and tested for balance--usually balancing at the point where the handle meets the shaft or slightly further down the shaft. The former creates a very light-feeling baton while the latter provides for a subtle feeling of weight at the tip of the baton. Occasionally, depending on the selection of wood for the handle, weight may be added to the butt of the baton handle to provide the proper balance. In cases where this is necessary, the weight is made from solid brass, sanded and polished to a bright shine.
As long as wood shaft batons are stored properly, the shafts should retain their natural appearance. Wood can move over time, and it is not unusual for slight warping to occur. Warped or broken shafts can be replaced. Simply contact me for costs and shipping information.
