The Contrabassoon Reed case uses the SAME foam inserts as the bassoon reed case. It can make for a fairly tight fit, but most contrabassoon performers who have purchased the case have said their reeds fit without any issues at all. One customer stated that their approach to reed making resulted in a slightly wider tip than usual, but his solution was to angle the reeds so the overlap did not create reeds that were rubbing up against each other. In fact, as with the bassoon reed case, the angled notches hold the reed securely, and the flat strips of foam suspend the reed tops securely to keep them safe during transport. The reed case measures approximately 6 1/8 inch wide x 4 inches deep, and it holds eight reeds. Their are air holes on either side of the case wear the tips of the reeds sit, and the lids are designed to allow for air movement as well. The case pictured was made from the imported/exotic wood, Zebrawood.
Any exotic wood orders (e.g. cocobolo, rosewood, zebrawood, purpleheart, etc.) are priced based on the fluctuating market, and dual wood case orders are custom built. Please email the shop directly at rgarrett@iwu.edu to inquire about availability and cost of exotic/imported and dual woods.
